How do you get started in the process of observing and accepting what is?
Being aware of your thoughts and feelings is the first step.
Have you ever been in an attic? Can you imagine climbing up the stairs and looking into that dark space? Then, you reach for the string to pull the switch on a light bulb. Voila! Now the attic is illuminated.
Imagine your mind as an attic, and it is largely dark in the background of your life. Now imagine pulling that string and illuminating those thoughts. Welcome mindfulness! You are aware. When you are aware, you can notice if you have thoughts of fear, worry, shame or guilt. If you have thoughts that bring on these emotions, your thoughts are taking you on a journey. Fear and worry are in the unknown future. Shame and guilt reside in the past.
Bring yourself into the NOW. It's now o'clock! To shift from past or future focused thoughts, engage your body in the present. Use your senses to see, hear, touch, taste and smell where you are right now. Breathe. Be here now. In this place of present moment awareness lies your power to observe and accept what is in your life. Letting go of resistance is so freeing. Play with this. Let me know what metaphor works for you when it comes to inviting mindful awareness into your life.
