Here you are, going about your life, enjoying the day, engaging with others, feeling calm and confident.
Life is good.
Then, a thought arrives. And you feel deflated. Negative thoughts often stem from feelings of not being "good enough." Other times, they come from external experiences. When this happens, tune into your feelings. How does it feel when this thought permeates your being? Can you reach for the next best feeling thought? For example, "I'm not good enough." Then, "I am good at _____."
One way to play with shifting your thoughts is to use creative visualization. Take a moment and tune into your breath. After a few conscious breaths, identify the upsetting thought. In your mind's eye, encase the thought in a helium balloon. While breathing, and relaxing your eyes, allow the balloon/s to float off into space. If you feel strongly attached to the thought, imagine using a scissor to cut the ribbon that is holding the balloon in place. Cut it, release it, watch it float away. Sit with this imagery. You are enough. Take a breath and return to your next best feeling thought.
