Sometimes when you act out of habit, without being mindful, you may get upset with yourself. You ask, "Why did I just do that?" or "How did I let that happen?"
Isn't it consoling that the sun rises and sets, out of habit. Sometimes acting out of habit can be just what we need.
Other times, being intentional can be really powerful! Shifting from habitual action to intentional action takes mindfulness.
A piece of the mindfulness puzzle is being okay with yourself, just as you are. Rather than label your habits "good" or "bad," simply witness them, like a beautiful sunset. They happened.
From this place of witnessing and acceptance, you can practice mindfulness. In so doing, you become more intentional.
